And he speaks!

abc_baby_speak_090217_mnOscar said his first word last night!

“Ma”.

“MA!”  He said Ma!

I was hiding in my room preparing for a conference call this morning so my husband took over for a few hours.  I could hear Oscar bombing around and babbling and laughing and tearing up the place (God, it’s SO HARD to stay away when I hear him having so much fun!).  It was time for a bfeed so I went out to the living room to get him.

He looked up at me, pointed, and said “Ma”!

Now, babies babble and throw around all these syllables constantly (Da, Ba, Ma), but it’s just that – throwing around syllables (it’s all part of talking & learning to talk though).  They babble.  They have a BLAST with it all… and yet it’s just babble talk.  Hey, it’s still talking - I mean it’s FANTASTIC, it’s just even more fantastic when they have that certain intent behind it for the first time (wow… talk about babbling!).

The difference between this time and other times?

Intent.

He looked up at me.  He pointed at me.  And then he said, “Ma”.

How exciting!  My baby addressed me as mom for the first time!  YAY!  And then he promptly signed for milk (he’s done that once before, a few weeks ago I guess).  So he’s communicating with me in a new and different way now (figures… just when I finally understand his cries….).  I’m such a proud mom right now, I’m just beside myself with glee.

Exciting times!

On a side note, Donald said, “Ma” is what chinese kids call their moms (or A-ma) (pronounced “ah-ma”), so we have decided that Oscar is now ESL.  His first word was in Cantonese.  ;)

I’m sure that made you so happy! :-)

It was incredible! I’m still so happy! My little dude… sigh. :) Hey, did you get the coffee card yet?

  3. Allie says:

I did get the coffee card last week. Thanks! They grow up so fast. I still can’t believe my little guy is almost 20 months. . . .

I had a male friend whose wife worked evenings. While she was out, he would speak to their new baby, saying “da, da, da, da” over and over, hoping that the first word out of the baby’s mouth would be “da” instead of “ma”.

    It worked.

    Seemed like cheating to me.

Well, you know I was secretly hoping his first word would be “Da” for those midnight wakeups…. I could easily poke Donald and say, “hey, he’s calling for YOU!” ;)
